 Join a live question and answer session about tenants’ and landlords’ rights and responsibilities. An experienced landlord-tenant attorney will be available to answer questions about eviction protections for nonpayment of rent due to COVID-19, what landlords can and cannot do during (and after) the pandemic, the new process for collecting past-due rent through small claims court, what the outlook might be for renters now that the statewide eviction moratorium has expired and updated eviction protections for tenants in the City of Los Angeles and other parts of Los Angeles County. Whether you are a landlord or a tenant, you are welcome to attend and get the vital information you need.

In California, a landlord may be able to evict a tenant for not paying rent on time or violating the lease or rental agreement. This training will go over the rules and procedures in the evictions and collection process. The training will be followed by a live question and answer session with the presenter. Whether a landlord or a tenant, you are welcome to attend.

This class will provide basic information and resources about habitability standards in Los Angeles. The instructor will explain the different between Housing Code violations such as leaks, inoperable windows, illegal construction and Health Code violations such as rodent problems, no water at the property and mold. You will learn what to do if your landlord is not addressing needed repairs, how to prepare for inspections and how to use habitability protections to advocate for safe housing.

ON DEMAND: MCLE Volunteer Training: Representing Tenants Facing Eviction

L.A. County’s eviction crisis disproportionately affects low-income tenants who do not know how to navigate the complicated unlawful detainer court system. This eviction defense training will provide an overview of eviction laws to pro bono attorneys to encourage them to volunteer with a legal services provider to serve tenants and help them stay housed.   

Class covers: 

  • Basic housing law concepts and tenant protections 
  • Overview of eviction case process  
  • Practical tips for assisting tenants in eviction proceedings 
  • Pro bono eviction defense legal opportunities 

MCLE credit is only granted to attorneys licensed to practice law by the State Bar of California. Attorneys from other jurisdictions should contact their state bar to learn about credit reciprocity.

ON DEMAND: MCLE: Religious Tradition and Legal Principles

The more well-known types of religious law, like Catholic Canon Law and the law of Islamic countries, have been written about extensively, and those institutions promulgate official customary and religious laws more regularly. Even religions like Hinduism, although it has over a billion adherents worldwide, are underrepresented in comparison.
