Arna M. Fulcher is the CEO and President of Alford Consulting Group, and the owner of several successful small businesses. She has taught financial basics to new and aspiring business owners since 1992, and has served as Chair of the Empowerment Congress, Economic Development Committee for Los Angeles County, 2nd Supervisorial District, and the Metro Crenshaw/LAX Community Leadership Council. She was a Los Angeles Business Journal CFO of the Year Nominee in 2007. Arna is an accountant and registered tax preparer by trade, and earned her Bachelors Degree in Corporate Finance/Accounting from USC Marshall School of Business.

Elizabeth Glynn is a global operations and business development professional and, has worked with companies in export operations, compliance, trade finance, and global logistics with the objective of accelerating companies’ investment in exporting and maximizing their competitive advantage in global markets.

Initially having worked in global logistics and sales, Glynn transitioned from global transportation to managing the export operations for a company. Glynn streamlined the global logistics infrastructure; managed export, import, and foreign-based transactions; facilitated multi-country shipments, free trade zone projects; and negotiated letters of credit. She achieved seamless in-transit logistics movement of third country shipments; and, secured resolution of a six-figure transshipment cargo insurance claim. Glynn has interfaced with a diverse range of companies that includes working with program units at a space and & communications company to provide export training and facilitate global delivery of communication systems as well as to establishing export operations for a medical device manufacturer.

Since 1998 Glynn has taught courses in global business management, leadership, and ethics at the University of La Verne (M.B.A. program), and a number of global trade courses at UCLA Extension including global logistics and fundamentals of international trade. She has developed and presented customized programs at UCLA Extension and UC Riverside. Glynn holds a Master of International Management (M.I.M.) degree from the Thunderbird School of Global Management and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Linguistics from UC Irvine.

Karen Rooney has over 30 years of litigation experience, mostly in employment-related claims, including extensive trial and arbitration experience. She has represented many small businesses over the years, and is herself a small business owner and employer. Ms. Rooney served on the Board of the L.A. County Bar Association Attorney Referral Service and has volunteered as a mediator with both the Bar Association and the L.A. County Superior Court. She received her J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of San Diego School of Law.

Social Security Administration (SSA) survivor’s benefits are important economic resources for widows, widowers, and dependents. Until recently, these benefits could be hard for surviving partners of same-sex relationships to obtain. In this class, learn how to access SSA survivor’s benefits for same-sex couples.

Class covers:

• The history of SSA policies that created a disparate impact for same-sex couples

• Key cases and laws that affect SSA survivor’s benefits for same-sex couples

• Common issues when a surviving partner requests survivor’s benefits

• Who may be eligible for same-sex survivor's benefits

• Timing and other factors when determining eligibility for same-sex survivor's benefits
