Business Series: Know Before You Sign On the Dotted Line: Reading & Negotiating Business Contracts

New and growing businesses must enter into a variety of contracts, with landlords, suppliers, and clients, to name a few. Learn how to read common “boilerplate” contractual language and negotiate contractual terms to your advantage.

  • Contract law basics 
  • Essential terms of a commercial lease: what is negotiable and what is non-negotiable
  • Essential terms of a contract for goods or services 
  • “Typical” contracts negotiated by business people
  • Caveat emptor: how to avoid problematic contracts

Presented by Ryan Gustafson:
Ryan Gustafson
has worked at large international and domestic law firms where he gained extensive knowledge in real estate and business transactions. Through his tenures with leading firms such as Greenberg Traurig LLP, and Ballard Spahr, Mr. Gustafson advised clients on real estate and mixed use development matters and has represented borrowers and lenders in commercial real estate finance transactions, general corporate transactions, entity formation, and real estate and business due diligence. In addition to his work as a business and real estate attorney, Mr. Gustafson is a securities and general business litigator representing clients in mediation and arbitration, regulatory proceedings, and in state and Federal courts. Mr. Gustafson is admitted to practice in the California and Colorado Bars, and in all federal courts in both states. He is a graduate of Western Michigan University (B.A. 1995) and the University of Denver (J.D. 1999).
