ON DEMAND: MCLE: Deferred Action for Immigrant Workers

Undocumented workers who cooperate in employment and labor investigations may qualify on a case by case basis for discretionary protections by the Department of Homeland Security. Learn in this class about the administrative memorandum which details such policies, DHS Policy Statement 065-06 on “Worksite Enforcement: The Strategy to Protect the American Labor Market, the Conditions of the American Worksite, and the Dignity of the Individual.” The class will additionally address other forms of protection available to immigrant workers, and the general process of applying for deferred action.

Presented by: Cal Soto, Director of Workers Rights at the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON), and Helen You, Founder and Principal Attorney at the Law Office of Helen You. 

Cal Soto Cal Soto is the Workers’ Rights Coordinator at NDLON, organizing labor campaigns for the national network. Cal joined NDLON in 2015 from LatinoJustice PRLDEF Southeast, where he helped launch the Rights Restoration Project as a Ford Foundation Legal Fellow. By partnering with NDLON’s local worker leaders and labor centers, Cal uses his legal training to add to the capacity and technical knowledge of grassroots movements to end wage theft, ensure worker safety, and increase job stability.

Helen You is a dedicated advocate and zealous litigator primarily representing workers in cases involving discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and wage theft. For five years, Helen worked for Hennig Kramer Ruiz & Singh, LLP, where she learned to litigate individual and representative matters in state and federal court. In January 2024, Helen joined the Los Angeles Incubator Consortium and started her own legal practice, where she continues to represent employees. Helen previously served as the Board Co-President and Workers Rights Committee Chair for the National Lawyers Guild of Los Angeles.
