For many trans and nonbinary individuals, obtaining accurate identity documents is an important step for accessing services and reducing the risk of experiencing discrimination or violence. Learn about the processes for correcting these documents, which begins with filing a petition with the California Superior Court.
This class covers:
- Legal issues related to transgender and nonbinary identities
- The laws that regulate name & gender marker changes in California
- What court forms are needed to file for a name and/or gender marker change
- Resources for completing court forms
- Information about updating federal and state identity documents

Steven A. Friday is a staff attorney with Bet Tzedek’s Transgender Medical-Legal Partnership. Steven is a graduate of Loyola Law School, Los Angeles, where he earned a concentration in public interest law, worked as a research assistant in constitutional law, and served on the boards of the LLS Evening Student Bar Association and OutLaw (LGBTQ+ student organization). Steven joined the Trans MLP as an intern/volunteer law clerk in January 2019 and joined the staff in November 2020. Prior to attending law school, he studied chemistry at Virginia Tech and worked as a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.
