LIVE ZOOM: Starting and Growing Your Business: Where to Start

In this introductory workshop, learn the basic steps to starting your business, plus get tools and resources for in-depth training on what you “didn’t know you needed to know” about business.
Class covers:
- Developing a business idea and writing a business plan
- Identifying a market and reaching customers/clients
- Obtaining proper licenses and permits, and complying with tax requirements
- Funding your business – including funding opportunities available for business affected by COVID-19
- Exercising your legal rights and avoiding common legal issues
Participants are encouraged to join the Zoom session using video as this class may involve sharing of visual information and writings, participation via the chat function, and the opportunity to interact with others. Virtual networking reception to follow class.

Michael Chavez works for Managed Career Solutions Inc., a human capital and economic development corporation positioned within both the City and County of Los Angeles Workforce Investment Systems as a provider of workforce and business development. As a Program Specialist for the City of Los Angeles BusinessSource Center West Valley and Hollywood Regions, Michael helped launch numerous businesses in the greater Los Angeles area by teaching educational workshops and providing assistance with tasks such as filing and renewing business permits and licenses. Currently Michael oversees the Cybernaut Program for the Los Angeles Public Library, which aims to spread digital literacy and equity across Los Angeles.
Luis Luna serves as the Director of Economic Development for MCS and Program Director for the West Valley and Harbor BusinessSource Center in Los Angeles. With over a decade of finance experience, he has facilitated over $24.5 million in capital acquisition and assisted in creating and retaining over 860 jobs in the city. Luis is dedicated to inspiring entrepreneurship and leveraging technology to empower the community.
