Citators do not always come to mind when attorneys think of their ethical obligations to the court. However, presenting good law and conducting thorough research are the cornerstones of ethical lawyering. In this class, attorneys will learn how to use legal citators to validate and expand their research.
Class covers:
- How to use Westlaw’s KeyCite
- How to use Lexis’ Shepard’s
- How using citators can help attorneys fulfill their duty of competency to their clients
- How using citators can help attorneys fulfill their duty of candor to the court

John Miller (https://www.lalawlibrary.org/) is the Legal Education Librarian at LA Law Library. John attended UC Davis for his BA and JD. After graduating, John helped launch the UCD’s Tribal Justice Project. He then attended the University of Washington for his MLIS. John joins LA Law Library after serving as UC Hastings’ student services librarian. John also teaches as an adjunct lecturer of law at USC Gould School of Law and works with Native American tribes to promote access to justice.
