ON DEMAND: Housing Rights of Tenants With Mental Health

This training will focus on the rights granted by fair housing laws to tenants with disabilities, including mental health disabilities. Topics covered will include how tenants can use the protections under fair housing laws to advocate for a reasonable accommodation, request an accommodation and negotiate with landlords through an interactive process to reach agreement. Situations like the need for emotional support animals, accommodations during threatened eviction and third party payments will be discussed.

ON DEMAND: COVID-19 Stimulus Payments and Tax Credits

This workshop discusses how qualifying individuals can take advantage of the expanded federal- and California-based tax credits enacted or expanded in response to COVID-19 – even if they did not file a tax return. Tax credits covered will include the Federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), California EITC, Child Tax Credit, and the Young Child Tax Credit, and attendees will learn who is eligible and what is needed to receive these credits. The class will also provide an overview and re-cap of the stimulus payments offered through the CARES ACT and American Rescue Plan.

ON DEMAND: Service Animals: What You Need to Know

For a recent case on self-training and certification of service dogs, see C.L. v. Del Amo Hospital, Inc., 992 F.3d 901 (2021).

Gain a basic understanding of legal rights and responsibilities involved in the use of service and emotional support animals. This presentation will focus on various laws, such as the ADA, Section 504, and the Fair Housing Act, as they relate to service dogs and emotional support animals in business establishments and housing.

  • Is there a difference between a service animal and an emotional support animal?
  • What kinds of animals qualify as service animals?
  • Where can you take a service or emotional support animal?
  • What can I do if an establishment refuses to allow me to bring in my service or emotional support animal?
  • What happens if your service or emotional support animal is disruptive?
