IN PERSON: Legal Name & Gender Marker Change Workshop

Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2021. -  2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

**Registration Opens October 4, 2021**

Legal volunteers will help you complete the court forms necessary for you to petition the court for a legal name and gender marker change, and a filing fee waiver.

Assistance Includes:

  • Supplying the new court forms needed to file for a legal name & gender marker change
  • Providing the forms needed to ask the court to waive filing fees, based on income
  • Assistance completing the forms
  • Providing the address for where to file your completed court forms
  • Sharing information about recent changes in the law
  • Providing information for updating federal and state identity documents

 What to bring:

  • Social Security Number (SSN), if applicable
  • Driver’s license or California identification number, if applicable
  • Household income information to determine eligibility for fee waiver. This can include: pay stubs, disability or unemployment statements, or any other proof of income

Not covered: 
This workshop does not cover name changes for adults, minor children or those seeking a confidential name change. Individuals seeking an adult name change will be referred to the monthly adult name change workshopheld virtually. As technology develops, we are more vulnerable to intimate partners and former partners’ misuse of technology. Online domestic abuse can include stalking on social media, hacking of email accounts, sharing intimate photos or videos without consent, using GPS locators or spyware, and more. There could be an increased risk for being stalked, threatened, or harassed online. Learn about some ways an abuser can use technology and what you can do to keep yourself and your loved ones safe online.

As the nation recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, many individuals and families are burdened with medical debt, whether as a direct result of COVID-19 infection or because of loss of income and inability to pay medical bills. In this class, learn your legal rights regarding medical debt, and receive tips and best practices for paying, settling, or otherwise addressing debt owed to medical providers.

Class covers:

  • How to prioritize medical bills vs. other types of bills you owe
  • What collectors of medical debt can and cannot do, including limits on credit reporting
  • When and how to try to settle your medical debt
  • Correcting medical billing errors, and protections against “surprise” medical bills
  • Is bankruptcy a good option?
